What is Lemongrass and Lemongrass Tea?

Lemongrass is a lemony-scented stalky plant, native to South East Asia.
Lemongrass is a frequent flavor enhancer in Thai food, and serves as a basis for many Thai soups. Lemongrass stalks can be somewhat stiff or woody, and need some boiling time to soften up, so inclusion in soups is a perfect use.
The inner, less tough or bitter leaves of lemongrass can be used for tea. Pour boiling water over the softer leaves and steep for several minutes before enjoying.
As with all herbal or natural remedies, please consult with your health care provider before drinking lemongrass tea if you are pregnant, nursing or on medications.

Herbal teas, including all the teas discussed in these pages, should not be consumed by persons who are pregnant or nursing, unless approved by your health care provider. Herbal teas may vary in their ingredients and some herbal tea components may interfere with other important medications. For example, there is some concern that green tea ingestion during pregnancy may reduce the absorption of folate, an important nutrient in fetal nervous system development.
