Can Skin Care Products containing Green Tea polyphenols improve Acne or Rosacea?
Rosacea is an inflammatory skin condition that is more common among individuals of light skin complexion, especially those who flush or blush easily. Rosacea is characterized by redness, prominent blood vessels and pimples or pustules
Green tea polyphenols for topical skin care product use have been studied mainly as to their effect against ultraviolet damage to the skin and subsequent skin aging. Some authors propose that green tea extracts, particularly ECGC, may have an anti-inflammatory effect, and thus be potentially useful in decreasing the redness and inflammation of rosacea.
One such small study was reported by Tanweer Syed, MD, PhD at the 2005 American Academy of Dermatology. In this report, Dr. Syed used a 2% polyphenome green tea extract on the skin of 30 women with papules and pustules (bumps and pimples). Thirty additional women with rosacea were treated with a placebo medication. Although all the patients improved, those treated with the green tea extract did better.
This is a small study and does not mean that green tea products should be used for acne pimples or rosacea, nor are they approved by the FDA for this use. Some over the counter medications for acne, such as Clearasil Daily Oil Control Cream Cleanser with Green Tea and Peppermint already contain green tea additives, but it should be noted that these products, including this Clearasil product, may also have other proven anti-acne ingredients; the Clearasil product for example, contains the active ingredient 1% Salicylic Acid.

Honest Tea Press Releases
Herbal teas, including all the teas discussed in these pages, should not be consumed by persons who are pregnant or nursing, unless approved by your health care provider. Herbal teas may vary in their ingredients and some herbal tea components may interfere with other important medications. For example, there is some concern that green tea ingestion during pregnancy may reduce the absorption of folate, an important nutrient in fetal nervous system development.
